As preparation for this project, Floor and Jan have made a few trips to Malawi. During these trips they carried out research to establish the needs of the people and local residents, and they spent time searching for the right location to start the FloJa Malawi Project. The terrible conditions and hopeless situation that the children are living in made the need for this project even stronger. In 2007, during their third visit to Malawi the project began to take shape and after much contact and many discussions with various people and the village chief, a decision was made to locate the project in the village of Ngara, Karonga District (north of Malawi).
Ngara is a poor fishing village, by Lake Malawi. It is about 650km from the capital Lilongwe.
The people in Ngara earn their money by fishing and growing products such as corn, tomatoes, cassave and peanuts. These are sold at local markets in the city. Karonga is the nearest city, about 35km away.
Most of the help for orphaned or troubled children is currently in the centre and south of Malawi. There appeared to be very few projects for these children in the Karonga District, and a great need for a day care centre.
